A round of applause for Virginie Viard and her ability to continue the classic Chanel legacy by changing things up season on season. This time it was a youthful, cinematic themed spectacle.
Over at the Paris Fashion Week Chanel SS21 runway, we were (virtually) transported to a legendary Los Angeles neighbourhood. Yes, a mix of Hollywood glamour was injected into the Spring Summer collection. The show was teased out with a series of retro countdown vids (shared ahead of the show and then during) a mix of old and new cinema, shot in black and white, depicting Hollywood women chatting on the phone, driving convertibles, hanging out in condos and going about their everyday business L.A. in a cinematic manner.
The scenes at the show itself looked like the shore of a Los Angeles cove, that had moved the Hollywood sign (spelling out Chanel) to a less rocky location.
It was complete with feminine, showstopping looks (leather, tweed, vibrant colours, 80’s shoulders, in fact more youthful than usual) and irresistible voices which carried Chanel’s final rendezvous (at the Grand Palais) down the catwalk. The highlight was hearing the disco queen Jessie Ware and her sensational finale track, ‘Spotlight.’
