It’s not that often that a voice stops you in your tracks, the kind that is so mesmerising, hypnotic and equally significant through words and sound.
So there we were on a Sunday afternoon when we discovered the distinctive tones of our new favourite artist Vicky Sometani, who is capable of leaving a lyrical mark on your mind.
Her captivating work is one to add to your playlists, the kind you listen to when you let your day dreaming run away with you or soundtrack a moment of pure nostalgia.
This track (Perfume) in particular recognises the power of scent and association with a person you like. The strings stride in and out whilst Sometani’s voice soothes the soul.
Sometani has a strong selection of musical places to inspire her lyrics. She grew up in Chicago and has lived in NYC before finding love and moving to London.
Sometani tells us her magnetic track Perfume “is about nostalgia and looking back on our past selves and realising or finally admitting, that we were too afraid to pursue love.”
There’s something deeply personal about her songs, with Sometani drawing inspiration from the experiences she’s lived and the places she’s been. The idea for the single came to her “when I was packed on the crowded Victoria Line during rush hour and feeling anxiety as I always do, and then someone got on who was wearing the same cologne that my husband wears and it actually calmed me down. We always call it perfume in our house and immediately I knew that had to be a song.”
