The huge music and fashion show clue was probably subtly hiding in the location of the Tommy Hilfiger show, where the fashion crowd was invited down to The Apollo Theatre, bang in the middle of Harlem.
A popular and historic venue for the African American community in NYC, the Apollo has been home to epic performances since way back. Most notably from the likes of Michael Jackson, Prince, James Brown and Billie Holiday.
Yet on Sunday evening, we were treated to a performance by none other than the fashion giant Tommy Hilfiger and the latest collaboration with actress/singer Zendaya.
What a face of choice for a collaboration, totally apt as Zendaya fronted HBO’s latest coming of age phenomenon, ‘Euphoria’ this summer. Her effortless style, cool cat aura and multi-talented star of the moment made her the best person to collaborate with for their new collection.
She is the epitome of fashion, music and entertainment, we’re sure Hilfiger, known to be a music lover must have jumped at the opportunity to build such an immersive show.
Models took us back to the seventies in an array of show-stopping jumpsuits and velvet tow piece ensembles. As for the soundtrack, Hilfiger opted for an end credits style selection of upbeat mo-town from Aretha Franklin’s ‘Respect’ and Curtis Mayfield’s ‘ Move On Up.’
Hifliger’s music roots have always been present in his marketing strategy. Back in the 90’s he pioneered the hip-hop movement, placing artists at the front of his campaigns and remaining culturally relevant to this day. Perhaps that’s why he got a double whammy with Zendaya, she blurs the lines between fashion and entertainment. We’re also a big fan of her track with Labrinth, ‘All For Us’ go listen!
