We’ll never forget one of our favourite gigs, back in 2013, seeing Daughter serenade a crowd the Anglican Cathedral, at Liverpool’s Sound City festival. We were under the magical spell of Elena Tonra’s angelic voice, the crowd stood silent in awe not making any room for whispers or trips to the bar.
Tonra’s voice is one that could survive on it’s own, full blown a capella, and although we’re sad to see her without ‘Daughter.’ We can say that her new solo material is a bit of treasure you won’t want to miss out on.
Elena now goes under the pseudonym Ex:Re which cryptically means, ‘regarding ex’ or x-ray cleverly documents a past relationship.
Elena said of the album, “Although the record is written for someone, a lot of the time it’s about the space without that person in it. In every scenario, there’s either the person in memory or the noticeable absence of that person in the present moment. I suppose it is a break-up record, however I do not talk about the relationship at all, and he hardly features in the scenes. He is only felt as a ghostly presence.”
