London is applauded for delectable afternoon tea and Sunday seemed to be our perfect time to indulge.
We can thank Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford for afternoon tea. During the 1800s she lived in an era when it was common to eat only two main meals a day. These meals were breakfast and dinner with a hunger gap in between. Like most of us, Anna couldn’t deal with the stomach pangs each day. It was then that she decided to schedule time to take tea and snack each afternoon. This private ritual was done secretively in her bedroom, but she gradually invited company to join her and the eating excercise spread across her peers like jam on a scone!
We’re still extremely grateful to Anna as yesterday we visited the DoubleTree Hilton for a spot of hunger pang remedy! Based in Tower Hill, the venue was a cosmopolitan Christmas Tea experience in their Skylounge bar, complete with champagne!
The Skylounge tea was delicious and garnished with a backdrop of panoramic views over the capital city. It’s here that you can discover the London landmarks over a scrumptious tiered stand of sandwiches and scones. The mix of savoury and sweet treats included cinnamon scones and Calvados cream, red velvet cupcakes, iced biscuits, cake pops, Christmas baubles filled with rich chocolate mousse, delicious sandwiches and mulled wine!
Yes it sounds like a mouthful but have no food fear as the decadent delights are perfectly sized. This means you to still have plenty of room to finish the spread! We enjoyed giving our taste buds a break by admiring the historic city of London and the River Thames. You must go in between 3-5pm to experience the London sunset whilst sipping champagne. It was a perfect place to wind down from the weekend, managing to avoid Sunday blues and watch the sky go by. We would recommend planning the day around your tea. Things to do in the run up to your feast might include St Paul’s Cathedral or taking a tour around the Tate Modern gallery which are nearby.
