Any excuse for a mid-week drink hey, well now you can as it’s Cuban Independence Day……
WHAT TO DRINK
Cuba Libre– the humble rum, cola and fresh lime – is a cocktail that was inspired by the battle cry of the Cuba Liberation Army during the War of Independence.
This classic was invented in the American Bar, in Havana, in 1900 just after the Cuban War of Independence. A soldier from the US Signal Corp asked the bartender to mix the drink he saw the Cubans drinking (BACARDÍ Gold with fresh lime) and this tasty new beverage that the Americans were drinking (Coca-Cola™ ). Raising his glass, he shouted ‘¡POR CUBA LIBRE! to celebrate ‘TO A FREE CUBA!’, and was joined in his toast by others at the bar. With the improved taste the name stuck and this Cuban-American collaboration went on to become one of the most popular cocktails in the world.
RECIPE: Fill a highball glass with ice cubes, squeeze and drop two wedges of lime. Pour on 50ml of BACARDÍ Gold rum. Top with chilled cola and stir gently.
