WOLF ALICE REVIEW LIVERPOOL SOUND CITY

Out of all the gigs we ventured to at Liverpool Sound City, the one that we’d go to again was performance from alternative rock band, Wolf Alice.

Sound City, a festival for tastemakers has seen the likes of Bastille, Ed Sheeran and The 1975 play here before their rise to fame. The festival’s hit record of forecasting underground talent meant this year we had our eyes wide open for the next big thing.

East Village Arts Club seemed to have every Sound City attendee crammed into the venue, Wolf Alice’s new found popularity suggested they’re en route to mainstream stardom in 2014 and everyone wants to say they saw them first.

The grungy guitars transport you back to the chaotic adolescent trials of your youth. In fact the entire performance was possibly an episode from cult show Skins, with fans awkwardly raving to their rock melodies. Tracks ‘Fluffy’ and ‘Moaning Lisa Smile’ (great pun) sends a rush of crazy adrenaline through the veins, but Wolf Alice know exactly when to tone down the angsty rock-pop with mello intervals in tracks like ‘blush,’ ‘bros’ and their cover of ‘Wicked Games.’

90’s britpop returns along with the female front woman (Ellie Rowsell), something on trend for next year. Rowsell captivates the audience with her stunning vocals and rock chic aura. Wolf Alice are the love child of The Cardigans and Elastica, a consequence of a 90’s one night stand…
