BASS TRUNKIES

This week we came across a very cool invention from Bass Trunkies and are so sure that they'll be top of our Christmas list this December. We love how each sound system has its own style and personality. If you're seeking the ultimate boombox then look no further than these stylish retro trunks........

July saw the launch of Cheltenham born company Bass Trunkies specialising in the creation of speaker systems using vintage trunks and recycled speakers. With basstrunkies.co.uk now live we catch up with the Bass Trunkies' creator and director to understand the driving force behind the idea and more about this extraordinary product (and how we can get hold of one!)

Dissatisfied with the generic 'brown, boxy and boring' speakers Director, Andy Rogers, wanted to create a system that coupled style and charm with quality of sound. Inspired by a dusty, leather, luggage trunk (found at a local market) Andy then sourced his first set of second hand speakers; an impeccable set of 'Wharfedales'!

'The quality of sound is paramount to the success of the product. For that reason the sourcing process is pretty meticulous. I look for only the best, premium speakers to ensure that each Bass Trunkie sounds as good as it looks...'

Following plenty of research and experimentation the Bass Trunkie prototype was born one which he now refuses to sell. Andy recalls his objectives in choosing such a design for his product,

'I wanted to create a product that could also seen as piece of art work or furniture. I source a range of trunks to accommodate differing tastes. One of my personal favourites is made from a sky blue 1970s suitcase. I love it's retro charm and it suits the genre and the era of the music I play.'

Other favourites include Bass Trunkies made from a vintage Singler Sewing Machine box and an antique naval trunk found at a local flea market.

'I love creating items that have components with a history. Each product becomes a story and bespoke in its own right. In a time where we are becoming more conscious of our environment Bass Trunkies is an example of where recycling can be innovative also.

Each Bass Trunkie can be also used as a portable speaker so ideal for any discerning picnickers or just those wanting to spend an afternoon in the park listening to their favourite sounds'

Following his first prototype Andy has since spent the last few months carefully sourcing and crafting his specialist stock and creating a brand ready to launch to the public,

'The website design and development has been very important in showcasing my product and delivering the Bass Trunkie style and image. Cheltenham company 'Solven Design' created a website that does exactly that and together we will continue to work on our web presence and image'

So what next for Andy and Bass Trunkies?

'For me it's about developing the best product and creating a strong brand. Bass Trunkies is not just a standard product it's about music, style and creativity. I would like to see my Bass Trunkies at not only major music events but also as a household item adding style and sound to peoples' homes... '
