Not only is Solange’s style kick-ass, her soulful neo-funk True EP provides the perfect laid-back soundtrack to this summer. ‘Losing You’ is still relentlessly on my playlist, a sunny but melancholic track with Solange’s vocals echoing dreamily throughout.
She first came on my ‘style’ radar when watching the video for ‘Losing You’. Solange’s effortless ability to wear head to toe print clashes, bold colours and flamboyant suits goes hand-in-hand with her edgy sound, and makes her different to any other female artist around at the moment. And have you seen her dance moves?! Ultimate cool-cat.
Luckily her stage presence isn’t limited to her videos, Solange performing ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ on the Letterman show was super-cute, her sixties inspired polka dot dress and white pointed t-bars lent to the retro vibe of the song, and her adorable backing singers made me want to be part of her band. Am I gushing much? More recently, she rocked the Park stage at Glastonbury wearing a matching silky Nixie number, graciously whipping her glorious thigh high braided hair in a Willow Smith fashion.
Want to re-create Solange’s look? Work with what you’ve got; pull out prints and bold colours from your wardrobe. If clashing prints scares you, stick to one stand out piece i.e. printed trousers, and play it down with neutral pieces. Or go crazy and clash, but note it’s easier to clash prints with colours in the same family i.e. greens and blues.
